Overview
The I-PACE was Jaguar's first electric car and one of the first performance EVs from an established premium brand. Launched in 2018, it was built for Jaguar by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, until production ended in late 2024. It never had a predecessor and has no direct successor, which makes it a modern classic in waiting.
The hardware
Two electric motors, one on each axle, drive all four wheels. Jaguar quotes 400 PS and 696 Nm for the EV400, 0–62 mph in 4.8 seconds (0–60 mph in 4.5) and a top speed of 124 mph. A 90 kWh battery, with 84.7 kWh usable, gives a WLTP range of up to 292 miles. These are manufacturer figures, not VOLT-AGE test results.
The award treble
In April 2019 the I-PACE won World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year and World Green Car at the World Car Awards in New York. Jaguar called it an unprecedented treble, and it beat the Audi e-tron to the top title.
A racing series of its own
Jaguar backed the car with the I-PACE eTROPHY, a one-make race series that ran alongside Formula E. Racing versions of the I-PACE competed at Formula E rounds such as the Mexico City ePrix, built to show that electric cars did not have to be boring.
Why it matters
The I-PACE proved that an established British brand could build a credible electric performance car early, years before most rivals. Used examples now make it one of the most accessible ways into a twin-motor premium EV, and it belongs in this directory as one of the cars that started the shift.
