Overview
The Air is the car that launched Lucid. It was designed in Silicon Valley, is built at Lucid's factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, and reached its first customers on 30 October 2021. This page covers the range-topping Air Sapphire, the version Lucid calls the world's first luxury electric super-sports saloon.
The hardware
The Sapphire is Lucid's first three-motor car: a single motor drives the front axle and a new twin-motor unit drives the rear, all developed and built in-house. Together they make 1,234 hp (908 kW) and 1,430 lb-ft (1,940 Nm). Lucid quotes 0–60 mph in 1.89 seconds, 0–100 mph in 3.84 seconds, a quarter mile in 8.95 seconds at 158 mph and a top speed of 205 mph. These are manufacturer figures, not VOLT-AGE test results.
Faster goes further
The Sapphire's 118 kWh battery sits on a 900-volt-plus architecture and charges at up to 300 kW. Even with the extra motor it carries an EPA-estimated range of 427 miles, and a WLTP range of 694 km, about 431 miles, in Europe. Carbon-ceramic brakes, track-tuned suspension, sport seats and a dedicated aero package come as standard.
A record-setting family
The Air was named 2022 MotorTrend Car of the Year, the first time the first product from a new car company won the award. The launch Dream Edition offered up to 1,111 hp or 520 miles of range. The Air Grand Touring now has the longest EPA-estimated range of any EV on sale, up to 512 miles, and in July 2025 one drove 1,205 km from St. Moritz to Munich on a single charge to set a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title. In 2025 the Sapphire was named German Performance Car of the Year 2026.
Why it matters
Most electric hypercars trade range for speed. The Air Sapphire pairs one of the quickest 0–60 times on the road with more range than most EVs, in a five-seat saloon with a proper boot. It belongs in this directory as proof that a new brand can beat the established names on efficiency and performance at the same time.
